Pimple Saudagar has no shortage of tuition classes — which makes choosing the right one for your child genuinely difficult. Big hoardings and marketing claims don't tell you what actually matters: who teaches, how many students share the teacher's attention, and how progress is measured.
This checklist gives you the questions worth asking before you enrol. Print it, take it to every class you visit, and compare the answers rather than the brochures.
1. Who will actually teach your child?
This is the single most important question, and the one most often answered vaguely. Larger coaching institutes are frequently sold on the reputation of a senior faculty member your child may never be taught by. Ask directly: which teacher takes this specific batch, for how many years have they taught this class and this board, and how often does the teacher change mid-year?
- Is the person teaching my child the same person I am speaking to now?
- How many years have they taught this class level specifically?
- What happens if that teacher leaves in December?
- Can my child sit in one real session before we decide?
A class that hesitates on the last question is telling you something. A free demo class in a live batch — not a specially arranged showcase session — is the most honest information you will get.
2. How many students are in the batch?
Batch size determines almost everything else on this list. In a batch of sixty, homework cannot be individually checked, doubts cannot be cleared the same day, and a quiet child who is falling behind will not be noticed until the results arrive. None of this is a matter of the teacher's dedication; it is arithmetic.
Ask for the actual current number, not the capacity, and ask whether it rises after admissions season. Then ask the follow-up that reveals the truth: how many minutes does the teacher spend on each student's written work in a typical week? If there is no answer, the answer is zero.
3. Does the class teach your child's board properly?
Pimple Saudagar draws students from CBSE, SSC and ICSE schools, and plenty of classes teach all three together from a common set of notes. That is efficient for the class and bad for your child, because the boards differ in textbook, chapter sequence, paper pattern and marking scheme.
Ask which textbook the batch works from — NCERT for CBSE, Balbharati for SSC — and whether test papers follow that board's actual format. A class teaching CBSE students from a generic question bank is preparing them for an exam that does not exist. We keep CBSE and SSC teaching separate for precisely this reason.
4. How is progress measured — and how do you hear about it?
"We take regular tests" means nothing on its own. The useful questions are about what happens after the test.
- How often are tests held, and are they chapter-wise or only at term end?
- Are papers corrected by the teacher who taught the chapter?
- Does the student get individual written feedback, or only a mark?
- How and how often are parents told — a message, a call, a meeting?
- What actually changes for a student whose marks are dropping?
That last question is the real test of a tuition class. A good one has a specific answer: extra doubt sessions, a call to the parent, revised practice targeted at the weak chapters. A weak one will tell you the child needs to work harder.
5. Are doubts cleared, and when?
Maths and Science are sequential. A doubt left unresolved for a fortnight does not stay one doubt — it makes everything taught afterwards harder. Ask whether there is dedicated doubt time, whether students can reach the teacher between classes, and — the question that matters most for a shy child — whether the teacher notices doubts that are never voiced.
6. Is the fee structure transparent?
You should be able to leave the first conversation knowing the full cost of the year. Ask what the fee covers, what is charged separately, whether test series and study material are extra, whether instalments are possible, and what the refund position is if your child stops attending in month two.
Beware of any class that will not discuss fees until after a hard-sell session, and be equally wary of unusually low headline fees — they are usually a batch size of eighty, or a long list of extras arriving later. Fees are best discussed directly and specifically, which is why we talk them through on a call or after the demo class rather than publishing a number that ignores your child's class and requirement.
7. Is the timing and location genuinely workable?
The best class in Pune is the wrong choice if the commute exhausts your child. Be realistic about travel at the actual time of day the batch runs, not at the time you visit. Also check what happens when the batch timing clashes with school events, and whether missed sessions can be made up.

8. What is the classroom actually like?
Visit before you enrol, during a live batch. Lighting, seating, ventilation and noise all affect a child's ability to concentrate for two hours after a full school day. Watch the room rather than the facilities: are students asking questions, is the teacher moving between desks, are children at the back engaged or invisible? You can see our study environment before visiting, but nothing replaces sitting in.
9. Do the claimed results hold up to a follow-up question?
Result claims are the easiest thing in this industry to inflate. Toppers get counted across years, students who attended one subject get counted as full-programme students, and the denominator is never mentioned.
You do not need to be adversarial about it — just ask the natural follow-ups. How many students appeared in total? What happened to the average student, not the topper? Can we speak to a current parent? Honest classes answer these comfortably. And a class that talks about students who came in at 45% and left at 75% is often telling you more about its teaching than one that only names its 95% scorers.
10. Does the class specialise, or promise everything?
A class offering every subject for every class from 1 to 12 is making a resourcing claim that is rarely true. Focus is usually a sign of seriousness rather than a limitation.
We are explicit about our own: all subjects for Classes 1 to 9, and for Class 10, Mathematics only. It is a deliberate choice — the board year is when Maths decides the percentage, and a single-subject batch of 25 gets a depth of preparation that a five-subject batch cannot. If you need all subjects for a Class 10 student, we will say so honestly rather than take the admission.

- Prefer verifiable specifics over impressive claims.
