For most Class 10 students, Maths is the subject that decides the final percentage — and the one where marks can improve fastest with the right approach. After 18+ years of teaching board students in Pimple Saudagar, we've seen students move from 40% to 90%+ in a single academic year.
The reason Maths responds so well to effort is simple: unlike subjects that reward memory, Maths rewards method. A student who fixes their method fixes their marks. Below is the exact sequence we use with board-year students, in the order it actually works.
1. Find out where the marks are actually being lost
Almost every student who says "I'm weak in Maths" is not weak in Maths — they are weak in three or four specific places. Before changing anything, take one full previous-year paper under exam conditions and mark it honestly. Then sort every lost mark into one of four buckets:
- Concept gaps — you did not know how to start the question at all.
- Method slips — you knew the approach but took a wrong turn midway.
- Calculation errors — the method was right, the arithmetic was not.
- Presentation losses — you got the answer but lost step marks, units, or diagram marks.
This single exercise changes a student's whole plan. A student losing 30 marks to calculation errors needs daily timed practice, not more theory. A student losing 30 marks to concept gaps needs to go back two chapters. Treating both the same way is why months of effort sometimes produce no change.
2. Rebuild concepts before you touch formulas
The most common mistake in board-year Maths is memorising formulas for chapters whose logic was never understood. It works for a week and collapses in the exam, because boards no longer ask formulas directly — they wrap them inside situations.
The test for whether a concept is genuinely understood is not "can I solve this sum?" It is "can I explain this to someone who has not studied it?" If a student can explain why the quadratic formula works, why similar triangles have proportional sides, or what a probability of 0.4 actually means, the formula becomes almost unnecessary — it can be reconstructed.
Practically: for every chapter, write one page in your own words covering what the chapter is about, the two or three core ideas, and where each formula comes from. 3. Prioritise chapters by weightage, not by comfort
Left alone, students revise the chapters they already like. That is the opposite of what improves a percentage. Rank every chapter on two axes — marks it carries in your board's paper, and your current confidence in it. The chapters that are high-weightage and low-confidence are where your next 20 marks are sitting.
In both SSC and CBSE, algebra and geometry together carry the bulk of the paper, and within them a handful of chapters repeat heavily year after year. Trigonometry, statistics and mensuration are typically the fastest chapters to convert from weak to strong, because they are formula-driven and highly predictable in question style — which makes them the right place to start when time is short.
4. Practise in your board's exact paper format
SSC and CBSE papers are not interchangeable. They differ in question structure, in how sub-questions are grouped, in internal choice, and — most importantly — in how marks are awarded. A student who has practised only from a generic question bank walks into the hall having never seen the actual shape of their own paper.
From roughly the mid-point of the year, every practice session should use real board material: previous years' papers, and your board's official sample or model papers for the current pattern. Solve them in the same order, with the same time limits, on the same kind of answer sheet you will use in the exam. The goal is that by February nothing about the paper is unfamiliar except the numbers.

5. Write solutions the way examiners read them
Both boards award marks for method, not only for the final answer. Students routinely lose 10–15 marks across a paper purely on presentation — and these are the easiest marks in the entire syllabus to recover, because they need no new knowledge at all.
- Write the formula or the statement of the theorem before substituting values. That line often carries a mark on its own.
- Keep one step per line. Compressed working invites the examiner to miss a step you actually wrote.
- Draw the diagram for every geometry and heights-and-distances question, even when it is not explicitly asked. Label it.
- Carry units through the working and write them in the final answer.
- Never erase a wrong attempt into an unreadable mess — strike it through cleanly and restart below.
- Box the final answer so the examiner does not have to hunt for it.
A student who has never been taught this can gain a full grade band in a fortnight. It is the highest return-per-hour work available in the board year.
6. Keep an error log — and actually re-solve from it
Most students correct a mistake, feel relieved, and move on. Two months later they make the same mistake in the board exam. The fix is mechanical: keep one notebook of every question you got wrong. Write the question, what you did, and the one line describing why it went wrong — "forgot to check the discriminant", "used degrees instead of radians", "did not verify the extraneous root".
Every Sunday, re-solve five questions from the log without looking at the correction. This is the single habit that separates students whose mock marks keep climbing from students who plateau. Errors that survive three visits to the log are the ones to raise with your teacher directly.
7. Fix your exam-day time management before February
Running out of time is rarely a speed problem; it is a sequencing problem. Students lose 20 minutes on one stubborn question early in the paper and then rush through 30 marks of questions they could have answered comfortably.
The discipline to build into every mock: read the full paper in the reading time and mark the questions you can do immediately. Attempt those first. Give any single question a hard ceiling — if it has not moved in three minutes, leave a gap and come back. Reserve the last 15 minutes for checking calculations and completing anything left blank. Practise this in mocks until it is automatic; the exam hall is a bad place to try it for the first time.
8. A realistic month-by-month plan
- June–September: Stay slightly ahead of school. Build the concept file. Weekly chapter tests. No paper practice yet.
- October–November: Complete the syllabus. Begin chapter-wise previous-year questions. Start the error log seriously.
- December: First full-length timed papers. Diagnose the four buckets again — the mix will have changed.
- January: Full papers twice a week. Targeted repair of the two or three weakest high-weightage chapters.
- February: Revision from your own concept file and error log only. No new material. Two or three final mocks.
The plan matters less than the fact that there is one. Students who improve dramatically are almost never the ones who studied the most hours; they are the ones whose hours were pointed at the right thing.
Where small batches make the difference
Every step above depends on someone actually looking at your child's work — spotting that the errors are calculation-based and not conceptual, catching the presentation habits that cost step marks, noticing in October that trigonometry is still shaky. That is not possible in a hall of eighty students.
